The USA intends to return 4,6 million dollars to Kyrgyzstan stolen by the family of ex-President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. This was stated by the First Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United State Alice Wells.
In total, the court of US ruled to confiscate 6 million dollars illegally stolen during the presidency of Bakiyev by his family.
Kyrgyz government through law firms has requested the return of the confiscated money from the United States. On October 4 of last year, the US Department of Justice approved the petition. However, of the 6 million dollars sounded, only 4, 6 million dollars were found.
“The return of these funds is a great achievement and an important event in relations between the two countries. It is a demonstration of US government support for the Sooronbay Jeenbekov anti-corruption campaign”, - said the First Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Alice Wells.
In addition, she added that the returned funds will be directed towards the development of the regions, the provision of clean water to rural residents, the purchase of medicines, recording equipment for court sessions, which should help strengthen public control.
Recall, it should be noted that Kurmanbek Bakiyev led Kyrgyzstan from 2005 to 2010. He was overthrown on April 7, 2010 as a result of a revolution in which more than 80 people died. It is known that now he lives in Belarus.
