Japanese banks will allocate 52 million dollars for the introduction of high-speed Internet in Uzbekistan. This was stated in a government decree signed on November 23.
According to the document, the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) will allocate loans to expand the backbone data network using DWDM technology.
The main part of the project budget - 44 million dollars will be financed by JBIC, 8 million dollars will be allocated by SMBC. About 4 million dollars are own funds of Uzbekistan. Thus, the total cost of the project will be 56 million dollars. The money of Japanese loans will be spent on the purchase of equipment, and their own funds will be spent on construction and installation works and other expenses.
In addition, a few weeks ago, Uzbektelecom promised that from December 1, the Internet speed in the country will increase tenfold thanks to the modernization of international nodes through which the republic got access to external Internet channels.
Moreover, in early January 2018, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev instructed to increase the Internet speed in the country at least four times by the end of the year, and by 2020 to bring it to the level average for the CIS countries.
It is also interesting to note that according to the Speedtest Global Index rating for October, Uzbekistan ranks 110th in terms of mobile Internet speed in the world and 112nd in ranking of the speeds of wired Internet .
