The UN Committee against Discrimination against Women asks the Tajik authorities to repeal the punishment for prostitution. Priestesses of love in Tajikistan are punished with a fine or administrative arrest for 15 days.
On October 31, members of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, in a meeting in Geneva, heard a report from Tajikistan. The delegation of Tajikistan, headed by the Prosecutor General of Tajikistan Yusuf Rahmon, included Idigul Kosimzoa, head of the Committee on Women and Family Affairs, and Gulnora Khasanova, head of the Statistics Agency under the President of Tajikistan.
The Prosecutor General stated that there is no criminal punishment for prostitution in Tajikistan. “In Tajikistan, prostitution is considered an administrative offense. However, criminal prosecution is envisaged for pimps, pimps and individuals involved in the organization of brothels”, - the head of the delegation of Tajikistan emphasized.
However, members of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women insisted that Tajikistan should completely repeal the punishment for prostitution.
