The UN World Food Program (WFP) is developing a five-year country strategic plan that will help the government of Tajikistan achieve a “Zero Hunger” in the country by 2024. The WFP survey for August 2018 is published on the website ReliefWeb.
The survey shows that Tajikistan is the poorest country in the CIS, where 47% of the population lives on less than 1,33 dollars per day, and 17% live on less than 0,85 dollars.
In July of this year, the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rakhmon, at a meeting of the National Development Council, stated that the poverty level in Tajikistan over the past two years has decreased by 1,3%, reaching 29,7% at the beginning of 2018, while the poverty level is 14%.
In 2017, the World Bank in its report indicated that from 2003 to 2015 the poverty level in Tajikistan decreased from 73% to 31%. However, this level remains high, and the dynamics of its decline are unsustainable. Furthermore, 81% of the poor live in rural areas. There are large regional differences in poverty — from 20–22% in Dushanbe and Sogdi region to 39% in Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous region (GBAO).
