The official status of the Russian language might be removed from the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic.

The Executive Committee of the Congress of Social, Political and Patriotic Forces prepared a draft constitutional reform law. In one of the part of the draft they proposed to hold a referendum on the removal from the Constitution of the official status of the Russian language.

The representative of the public association Azimbek Beknazarov expressed his concern about Kyrgyz language and commented on the official status of the Russian language at a meeting in Bishkek on January 15.

"It is necessary to speak Russian. However it shiuld be used only as an international language. This language should be taught in the kindergarten as a foreign language as English, the state language should be Kyrgyz, the case should be in Kyrgyz language. If we do not take such measures Kyrgyz language will disappear", - noted Azimbek Beknazarov.

The initiative group proposes to hold referendum on November 24th in draft law on constitutional reform.

In addition, the Russian language has the status of official language in the Constitution of the Kyrgyz Republic. A certain group of society is not happy with the fact that the cities have offices and services in Russian.
