Russian space agency Roscosmos plans to make 240 launches of the Soyuz-5 carrier rocket from the Baikonur cosmodrome within 40 years, according to a video posted by Roscosmos chief Dmitry Rogozin on Twitter.
"The lifecycle of the [Baiterek space] complex will make 40 years, within which 240 carrier rocket launches will be conducted, with the total budget amounting to $14.4 billion," the video said.
The space rocket complex "Baiterek" is a joint project of Russia and Kazakhstan, which has been implemented since 2004. Initially, the project assumed the modernization of the launching table from the Zenith rocket at Baikonur for the Angara rocket, but the project’s cost which has grown many times afterwards forced the parties to revise the idea.
In 2016, Russia and Kazakhstan began discussing the possibility of implementing the Phoenix middle-class rocket launches as part of the Baiterek project, which later became known as Soyuz-5 in Russia and Sunkar in Kazakhstan. After Rogozin headed Roscosmos, he declared that the Soyuz-5 missile would not be created in the previously proposed form, since it largely repeats the existing Zenith.
