After joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) in Kyrgyzstan, only 700 out of 1,500 poultry farms could continue to work, The head of the Association of Poultry Farmers of Kyrgyzstan Rustam Osmonaliev informed the KirTAG agency.
According to Osmonaliyev, domestic poultry products cannot compete with imports. The situation worsened when in 2015 Kyrgyzstan joined the EEU and opened its borders. “A stream of cheaper products rushed to Kyrgyzstan, plus large amounts of counterfeit,” the head of the association complained.
Osmonaliev explained that Kyrgyzstan does not produce the right calorie in the right amount, they have to be bought abroad. As a result, Kyrgyz farmers are forced to sell meat and eggs more expensive than foreign producers. In addition, the state does not provide any support to the poultry farmers, although this industry has received special attention throughout the world.
“In terms of poultry production, Kyrgyzstan is in the penultimate place in the CIS, after Tajikistan. But even Tajikistan this year introduced changes to the Tax Code to support the poultry industry”, said the head of the association. According to him, now the share of domestic poultry meat on the Kyrgyz market is 5%, eggs - 45%. “The industry can be said to be on the verge of complete extinction”, noted Osmonaliev.
