In Kazakhstan, almost 50% of the population suffers from obesity, and every year this figure is growing, said the head of the surgical department of the hospital Ergali Gabbasov.
He noted that people with obesity have difficulties in their work, in the family and have serious health problems. They consider themselves outcasts, because weight often affects the social status of a person.
In the hospital, the President's Managerates are struggling with this ailment. For 10 months, surgeons have performed bariatric surgery for obese patients. However, this operation is expensive. Reduction of the stomach costs the patient from one to two million tenge, and only in some cases this amount is partially covered by the Ministry of Health.
Per Ergali Gabbasov, such operations can be economically profitable for the state, because after intervention, patients will no longer need free supply of drugs from obesity-related diseases.
The World Health Organization recognized obesity as a disease. They mentioned that in 2014, 1.9 billion adults were overweight, and 600 million people were obese. It is predicted that up to 2025 from excess weight 50% of the population of our planet will suffer.
