The indicator of Kazakhstan in the ranking of countries on the level of freedom over the past year has not changed. As a year ago, Freedom House experts estimated democracy in Kazakhstan at 22 points out of 100, which corresponds to the status of a non-free country.
Despite the lack of progress, the indicator of Kazakhstan is still better than in Belarus (21 points), Russia (20 points), China (14 points), Uzbekistan (7 points), Turkmenistan (4 points). High level of freedom is noted in Mongolia (85 points), average - in Ukraine (62 points).
A score of 100 points was reached in Sweden, Finland, Norway, in 99 points the level of freedom in Canada and the Netherlands was estimated. As noted in the report, the United States retreated from its traditional role as a model of democracy against the background of a decline in political rights and civil liberties in America (86 points).
According to Freedom House, in 2017, democracy has faced the most serious crisis in the last decade, as its basic principles, including guarantees of free and fair elections, minority rights, freedom of the press and the rule of law, have come under attack around the world. In 71 countries there is a decrease in the observance of political rights and civil liberties, and only 35 states recorded growth. This indicates that the indicator of global freedom is declining for 12 consecutive years.
