On January 18, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev chaired the debate in UN Security Council meeting, as Kazakhstan presides the Council this year.
‘The provisional agenda for today's meeting is the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, confidence-building measures. Let me welcome representatives of countries, members of the Security Council and other guests’, Nursultan Nazarbayev said in opening statement.
‘Weapons of Mass Destruction and Confidence Building Measures’ is the topic of the UN Security Council meeting. It was proposed by Kazakhstan under the Presidency over the Security Council and was supported by all members of the Council. The weapons of mass destruction, Afghanistan, Central Asia, and the Middle East were the focus of the Council meeting. President of Poland Andrzej Duda, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov, and other officials are participating the meeting.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also made a welcoming speech. ‘It is a great pleasure for me to join you in this debate, and I thank the Republic of Kazakhstan for convening this discussion. There is a tradition in Kazakhstan to create a world free of weapons of mass destruction and a global non-proliferation regime’, Guterres said.
The Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov and Senator Dariga Nazarbaeva also take part in the work of the Security Council.
The Security Council is a standing body of the United Nations, which has the primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. The UN Security Council consists of 15 members, five of which are permanent: Britain, China, Russia, the United States, France. Kazakhstan was the first Central Asian country to be elected to preside over the 15-member entity.
Recall, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev is on an official visit to the United States. Two days ago, the Head of State met with President of the USA Donald Trump.
